Just because it has cooled off doesn't mean your outdoor plants are no longer thirsty. Especially evergreens. They rarely wilt, but they need to be adequately watered until the ground freezes (and a light frost doesn't count). So, if your soil looks dry, drag out the hose and liberate those roots from their thirsty misery. Every two weeks is about right.

You'll get your kids' help with the yard more easily if you allow them to "leaf leap" when you're through. You may have to rerake some of the leaves, but with your phone for a camera, you'll have great memories to share! Print out a favorite to put on the fridge or even frame and hang on the wall! You will enjoy it for months to come!

Your grass needs a winter blanket, too. Of course, where you live makes a difference, but for yards that go completely brown (dormant) over winter, try a slow-release organic fertilizer. Not too much, and not too little. As the fairy tale says, enough to make your grass's winter blanket "just right." Check with your local garden store for their recommendation.

Farmers' markets are still in swing in most areas, and you can get the best deals as the season winds down. Ask about the most flavorful choices they have, and that's what's on the menu for the weekend. Carve it up, serve it up, a seasonal meal fit for a king or queen (which is of course You!).

It's easy to decorate for the fall season (dare I say ... Halloween) without going the traditional route. Colorful leaves. Orange pumpkins. Gourds and ears of corn. You can collect many of these from your yard or garden or pick them up at the store. Assemble them in shallow baskets, and your fall decor is complete!
