Ice storms or other winter weather events can take out the power at the worst possible times. Have a plan if your neighborhood goes dark. Can you drive to another town or stay with a friend? Don't forget your pets. They need to be warm, also.

Don't, if you can help it. Really, don't. A latte from the shop isn't vital during a winter whiteout. Save your nine lives for a summer bungee jumping bonanza. You'll enjoy it more.

Now that your kiddos' Christmas enthusiam for all those toys has begun to wane, do a battery health checkup. If any are running low, leave out extras within easy reach. Your thoughtfulness will give the toys extra life and make them the gifts that keep on giving.

During a winter blitz, keep an eye on elderly relatives or neighbors. Moving slowly or stumbling in the cold can be a sign of hypothermia. Call 9-1-1 right away and get the individual to a warmer place. Blankets or towels (to warm up) are a must. Warm drinks can help, but avoid a hot bath. They need to warm from the inside out.

Prepare a New Year's Eve kit filled with small flashlights, extra batteries, and even scissors to cut tangled balloon ribbons. You will be the life (light!) of the party!
